Did you ever tried to change the gray color outside the work area?
Yes, we can change it. Here is a simple way to do it.
Set the foreground color as you wish, here I took blue. And Take Fill tool.
Hold down the Shift Key and click outside work area.

THANK YOU! in a fit of key strokes i changed the perimeter color to black and it has been driving me NUTS! you are a lifesaver!
